The BMW X1: The U.S. now gets its first sub-compact premium SAV

April 22nd, 2012

Having demonstrated that it is the perfect blend sports sedan-like driving dynamics and SUV utility in markets around the world, the BMW X1 is setting out to conquer the US. The talented Sport Activity Vehicle of the premium compact segment will make its US market debut armed with state-of-the-art powertrain technology, innovative features, selective design modifications and extensive interior refinements. The new 2013 BMW X1 celebrates its US premiere at the New York International Auto Show and will arrive in authorized BMW Centers in the fall of 2012 starting at an MSRP of $31,545 (including $895 Destination and Handling).

The smallest BMW X model – produced at BMW Plant Leipzig – will take the leap across the pond with a renewed spring in its step, the result of a carefully judged honing of its core qualities. The design of the BMW X1 body now provides an even more intense expression of the vehicle’s muscular presence, contemporary allure and versatile sporting capability. Its interior includes newly designed surfaces, more polished controls and high-quality touches exuding the exclusive premium ambience of a compact BMW X model.

The BMW X1 has adopted a pioneering role among its premium class rivals in its current markets – and a repeat performance in the US is expected. Blending the versatility and robustness of a BMW X model with a high level of agility and compact exterior dimensions, the X1 has set new standards from the word go. Powerful engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and a broad spectrum of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies fitted as standard worldwide give the new BMW X1 the tools to further increase its lead over the competition in terms of sporting ability and efficiency.

Design: new touches to sharpen its contemporary looks and enhance its versatility and sporting flair.

Typical BMW proportions, expressive, vibrant surfaces and signature BMW X model design cues shape the appearance of the BMW X1. A sweeping hood, long wheelbase and set-back passenger compartment emphasize the vehicle’s dynamic talent, while attractive light and shade effects hint at its inherent agility. The versatility and robustness of a BMW X model are reflected in elements such as the black edging at the lower edge of the body and wide wheel arches.

When viewed from the front, the powerful stance of the new BMW X1 on the road and its aura of quality are now accentuated with even greater intensity. A larger number of surfaces painted in body color highlight the vehicle’s enhanced elegance. The path of the vehicle’s lines, which converge on the license plate mount from either side of the BMW kidney and forge outwards in the lower section of the bumper, is borrowed from BMW X models in higher vehicle segments. The newly designed headlights allow a detailed view of the advanced light technology within. And a chrome-coated accent strip now cuts across the top of the twin circular headlights. Meanwhile, an LED accent light – included as part of the optional xenon light package, complete with LED light rings for the daytime driving lights – provides the classic BMW focused look.

The distinctive profile of the X1 is defined by a main character line that rises steadily to the rear of the vehicle while another line visually extends the contours of the side window surrounds as it flows towards the rear. The pronounced side skirts – that are a signature feature of BMW X models and the powerfully bulging wheel arches add sporting flair. Finally, the turn signal indicators are now integrated into the newly designed exterior mirrors.

The premium feel of the new BMW X1 is also underlined at the rear by the new subdivision of fascia, bumper and undertray, with the repositioned reflectors now also bordered by surfaces painted in body color. As a result, the black elements are slimmer, while the silver-colored undertray has a more striking surface structure.

Interior: precise lines, high-quality materials, sophisticated color scheme.

The modifications to the design of the new BMW X1 interior create an even more vivid showcase of the sporty driving pleasure, cutting-edge versatility and premium feel this vehicle provides. The side of the center console angled towards the driver is now shallower, spotlighting the driver-focused nature of the cockpit design.

High-quality electroplated trim surrounding for the gearshift lever and center console cupholders, a chrome strip for the headlight switch and chrome touches for the side edging of the Control Display – when the optional navigation system is specified – all add the finishing touches to the interior’s premium feel. Plus, the air vent surrounds are given a high-gloss black surface.

The BMW X1: more sporting and efficient than ever.

The variants of the BMW X1 offered in the US market will be powered by BMW TwinPower Turbo gas engines. This package of technology consists of twin-scroll turbocharging, High Precision Direct Petrol Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-Vanos variable camshaft control. In both the award-winning 6-cylinder inline engine under the hood of the BMW X1 xDrive35i – developing 300 hp – and the 240 hp 4-cylinder engine powering the BMW X1 sDrive28i and BMW X1 xDrive28i ensure instantaneous power delivery, impressive acceleration and exceptional efficiency.

Both engines are paired with an automatic gearbox and extensive BMW EfficientDynamics technology. Features including the Auto Start-Stop function (28i only), Brake Energy Regeneration and demand-based operation of ancillary units all help to achieve a blend of performance and fuel economy unique in the market.

The BMW X1 sDrive28i with customary BMW rear-wheel drive and the all-wheel-drive xDrive35i will be offered exclusively in the US market. The intelligent all-wheel drive of the BMW X1 xDrive35i and BMW X1 xDrive28i varies the distribution of drive between the front and rear wheels, as required. This electronically controlled power distribution ensures optimum traction and unbeatable directional stability in all weather and road conditions, as well as noticeably sportier responses through dynamically taken corners.

GRANDAM: Turner Motorsport ready to return to action at Birmingham

Turner Motorsport Back in GRAND AM Action at Barber Motorsports Park

#94 TURNER MOTORSPORT BMW M3: BILL AUBERLEN, PAUL DALLA LANA

Amesbury, Mass. – March 28th, 2012 — Turner Motorsport will be back on track at Barber Motorsports Park, in Birmingham, Ala., on March 29 – 31 for Round 2 of the 2012 GRAND AM Series. Both the Rolex Sports Car and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge (CTSCC) series will race following a two-month break in the schedule after the season-opening races at the 50th Rolex 24 at Daytona weekend.

Over the past three years of competition at the sinuous Barber circuit the experienced Turner team has developed quite an affinity for the track’s 2.3 miles and 17 turns. In both Rolex GT and CTSCC Grand Sports (GS) competition the blue and yellow liveried Turner Motorsport M3s have tallied one victory, two seconds, a fifth and two sixth place finishes.

In last year’s CTSCC Barber 200 Bill Auberlen and eventual GS driver’s champion Paul Dalla Lana finished second. Michael Marsal, co-driving with Joey Hand, finished sixth. In 2010, Marsal and Hand finished third with Auberlen and Dalla Lana two positions back in fifth.

Joining Rolex Sports Car GT competition in 2010, Turner Motorsport drivers finished sixth in their first race at Barber. Last year Auberlen and Dalla Lana took their second consecutive victory of the season at Barber in the No. 94 BMW M3.

This year Auberlen and Dalla Lana continue to co-drive both the No. 96 GS class M3 and the No. 94 GT class M3. Michael Marsal has been joined by longtime BMW driver Boris Said in the No. 97 GS class M3 this season. No stranger to Turner Motorsport, Said drove with Dalla Lana in the CTSCC finale at Mid-Ohio last year to help clinch the team and driver’s titles. At the BMW Performance 200 at Daytona International Speedway in January Marsal and Said began their season with a strong sixth place finish. Auberlen and Dalla Lana finished right behind their teammates in seventh.

“We have had great success at Barber,” said Will Turner. “Last year was especially good with Bill and Paul taking the GT victory and only narrowly missing the GS win. Both races at Daytona showed the BMWs have started the 2012 season with a less than favorable rules package, but the tight layout of the Barber circuit should favor the agility of our cars over the outright speed of our competitors.”

“The team has been busy testing and improving the cars since Daytona, I think they have made some good strides” said Bill Auberlen.”Paul Dalla Lana loves Barber so I am really looking forward to Saturdays races . Both of them!”

2013 BMW X1

March 27th, 2012

While the 2013 M6 convertible will get show-goers to the BMW booth, it’s the BMW X1 crossover they’re more likely to buy. As the X3 crossover has grown in size and risen in price — now at $39,395 for a 2013 BMW X3 xDrive28i — there’s plenty of room in the U.S. market for a vehicle like the X1.

2014 BMW M3 Preview

March 27th, 2012

There are no sacred cows when it comes to the BMW M3. Its first engine was a lightweight four-cylinder, then BMW bumped it up to a straight-6 and later to a small-displacement V8. It wasn’t about adhering to some kind of long-forgotten company mandate, it was simply about which engine made the M3 better.

That kind of thinking could make the upcoming 2014 BMW M3 yet another ground-breaking new vehicle when it arrives in about two years. Although initial rumors pointed to the possibility of an inline-6 boosted by a trio of turbochargers, there’s another, even more radical change in the works — a V6.

Because a V6 Fits
Yes, a highly advanced 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 is being developed, according to a BMW insider. The rejection of an inline-6, it’s claimed, is for reasons of packaging. The new V6 will be the first to mount its two twin-scroll turbochargers within the vee-angle, mirroring the company’s 4.4-liter V8 design. This unique-to-BMW approach reduces the length of the inlet tract compared with a regular turbo-vee setup, helping to sharpen throttle response and minimizing heat buildup after air passes through the intercooler.

The V6 apparently won’t be simply a cut-down version of the BMW V8, even though history records the M3′s 4.0-liter V8 as a chopped version of the old M5 V10, with an identical bore and stroke. A two-cylinder cut of the 4,395cc V8 results in a 3,270cc capacity, yet our insider insists that a 3.0-liter capacity is most likely.

In theory, a 60-degree vee offers the best primary balance for a six; however, a 90-degree angle is required for the two turbos to fit. BMW must then solve the imbalance issue by using either balance shafts or a unique firing order, as it did with the 90-degree V10 in the E60 M5. Outputs of the unique-to-M3 engine are believed to be around 429 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque: sufficient to fend off the Audi RS4 and Mercedes C63 AMG. Improved direct injection, extra boost and a higher compression ratio will all contribute to the advantage the V6 will have over the BMW 1M’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo straight-6.

For the first time, the M3 four-door sedan will launch before the two-door body styles.

So while the new twin-turbo V6 does seem the likely power source for the new M3, it also signals the end of a high-revving naturally aspirated engine for the car, a format synonymous with the badge over the past 26 years.

Shaving Pounds Where They Count
The next M3 will also be larger, yet lighter than the outgoing generation. Although the new F30 3 Series sedan is 3.7 inches longer than the E90, on average the range weighs 88 pounds less, thanks to alloy chassis components and increased use of ultra-high-tensile steel throughout the body. Further weight-loss strategies will be employed in the M3, with the M3 CRT concept previewing the advances.

Lightweight design components include a carbon honeycomb hood weighing around 6.6 pounds, titanium mufflers and carbon composite panels and seat parts. Aluminum wiring for the car’s electronics replaces heavier copper, saving another 15-20 pounds overall.

BMW is reportedly working on carbon-ceramic discs and aluminum calipers — saving 33 pounds on each corner — but this expensive tech will likely be introduced late in the car’s life cycle. Expect the M3 to tip the scales close to 3,483 pounds, which would be about 75 pounds less than the current coupe. Electric power steering — not fitted to the new M5 — is a possibility for the new M3, while a six-speed manual will continue alongside a revised seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

The E92′s electronics — including adaptive dampers and M-Sport differential — will be revised to complement the new 3 Series’ wider tracks.

The Internal Word
For the first time, the M3 will get a unique code name, tipped to be F80 for the sedan and F82 for the coupe and convertible. Also for the first time, the M3 four-door sedan will launch before the two-door body styles. Debate continues inside Munich over the possibility of renaming the 3 Series coupe and convertible as the 4 Series; however, a name change to M4 is something the M division is apparently actively against.

When the M3/M4 debuts in early 2014, it will need to comply with Euro 6 emissions standards and substantially undercut both the E92′s 11.9L/100km and 1M’s 9.6L/100km consumption ratings, while achieving a low-4-second 0-60-mph time. That’s the new-age performance-car balancing act facing the M division engineers — more power and reduced emissions, all while maintaining crisp throttle response and high rev-ability. It’s not easy, but when you are free to use any means possible, it sure makes things easier.

more athletic, more focused, more luxurious and more efficient than
ever before. Since the “M6” badge was first placed
on a BMW back in 1987, this model has exemplified the luxury and daily
usability of a top range BMW coupe combined with true super-car
performance. Now, in its 3rd generation, the all-new BMW M6
sports a new 560hp M TwinPower Turbo V-8 mated to a 7-speed M-DCT
transmission capable of propelling either model from 0 to 60mph in
under 4.3 seconds.

The hotly anticipated BMW X1 Sport Activity Vehicle
comes to the U.S. for the first time. Its rising horizontal lines give
it a sporty, elegant profile, while the classic BMW kidney grille,
distinctive headlights and L-shaped taillights are unmistakably
BMW. The BMW X1 is also the latest BMW vehicle to offer the
TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine which delivers BMW performance with
reduced fuel consumption. The updated BMW X1 will be available
in U.S. showrooms in summer 2012.

The recently updated BMW X6 M Sports Activity Coupe
combines the athletic and elegant lines of a coupe with the character
of a BMW X model and an outstanding driving experience. The new
X6 M receives several design updates and innovative features intended
to emphasize its width and track and road-holding prowess.

Introducing the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe – a
new 4-door, 4+1 seat addition to the 6 Series line that successfully
combines the stunning proportions, design and driving dynamics of the
6 Series Coupe with interior room and amenities for up to five
passengers. Harmonious proportions, precise lines and sleekly
contoured surfaces give the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe the unique ability
to satisfy the driver who wants a luxurious and sporty coupe yet needs
a car capable of carrying four adults in comfort and luxury. The BMW 6
Series Gran Coupe will be offered as three distinct models in the USA.
The TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder powered BMW 640i Gran Coupe is the
initial model and arrives early this summer. Later this summer, the
TwinPower Turbo V-8 powered 650i Gran Coupe and the all-wheel drive
650i xDrive Gran Coupe will join the range.
